Guidelines for Special Flight Medical Evaluation of Flight Personnel with Sensorineural Hearing Loss
Sensorineural hearing loss refers to a condition caused by damage to the cochlea
auditory nerve
or neural pathways above the cochlear nucleus
resulting in impaired auditory function
also known as sensorineural hearing loss.In China's current aviation medical examination standards for flight personnel
there is no specific provision dedicated to granting special medical certification for sensorineural hearing loss. However
in actual clinical aviation medical evaluations
flight crew members with hearing impairment often present cases where their hearing status exceeds the limits defined by individual assessment criteria. In the past
evaluations were typically conducted through comprehensive assessments based on factors such as the type of aircraft operated
flight duties assigned
operational requirements of the unit
and the individual's desire to continue flying
leading to special medical certification for some pilots with sensorineural hearing loss. Nevertheless
this approach lacked standardized quantitative measures and uniform criteria for evaluating hearing test results
making the evaluation process difficult to standardize and justify objectively. In recent years
with significant advancements in the performance of various military aircraft
continuous expansion of the pilot workforce
and rapid progress in aviation medical support technologies
it is expected that cases involving special medical certification for sensorineural hearing loss will gradually increase. To address this
the Aerospace Medicine Professional Committee of the Chinese People's Liberation Army
drawing upon research outcomes from national military standards projects and related studies
has convened experts in the field to have jointly developed the "Guidelines for Special Medical Certification of Sensorineural Hearing Loss in Flight Personnel
" aiming to provide scientific
standardized
and unified technical references for aviation medical evaluations.
