Research Progress on the Production of Stop Consonants in Hearing-Impaired Children
Children with hearing impairments often experience articulation disorders and incorrect phonation due to the lack of auditory feedback. Mandarin Chinese pronunciation primarily consists of vowels and consonants
with consonants playing a more significant role in speech intelligibility and clarity. Stopped consonants
being relatively early in the phonological acquisition sequence
involve complete closure at the articulatory site
sustained occlusion
and sudden release
creating a burst-like perceptual effect. Mandarin stopped consonants include /b/
/p/
/d/
/t/
/g/
and /k/
with four main types of articulation errors: substitution
distortion
omission
and addition. Abnormal articulation of stopped consonants leads to reduced speech clarity in hearing-impaired children
thereby affecting their daily communication. Therefore
mastering correct stopped consonant pronunciation is crucial. Based on this
the article reviews research progress on the articulation characteristics of stopped consonants
VOT influencing factors
auditory recognition
and comparisons with hearing children
clarifying the current state of stopped consonant research in China and providing insights for rehabilitation in hearing-impaired children.
