Long-Term Follow-Up Study of Speech Development in 0~6 Years Old Children after Cochlear Implantation
The main purpose of the study was to assess the development of speech perception and the effects of the age at implantation in CI children after long-term follow up.
Methods
2
A total of 1
258 participants were divided into six groups based on their cochlear implantation age: Group 1 (6~12 months)
Group 2 (13~24 months)
Group 3 (25~36 months)
Group 4 (37~48 months)
Group 5 (49~60 months)
and Group 6 (61~72 months). The Meaningful Use of Speech Scale (MUSS) was used to assess speech abilities at 0
6
12
24
36
48
and 60 months post-surgery.
Results
2
Speech abilities of groups 1~3 showed significant
increases from 0 to 48 months post-surgery (
P
<
0.05). Groups 4~5 exhibited rapid growth from 0 to 36 months post-surgery (
P
<
0.05). Group 6 demonstrated a significant increases from 0 to 24 months post-surgery
(P
<
0.05)
followed by slower growth in subsequent assessment periods (
P
>
0.05).
Conclusion
2
The MUSS questionnaire is an effective tool for evaluating speech abilities in infants and children after cochlear implantation. While the trend in speech ability is similar across different implantation ages
each group exhibits distinct characteristics. The growth rate of speech ability is faster and lasts longer in those implanted before the age of 3. Although early speech ability are higher in those implanted after 3 compared to those implanted earlier
their speech development progresses at a slower rate
and the period of rapid growth is shorter. Therefore
early cochlear implantation is necessary
